Historic Savannah – Southern Charm by the River

There is nothing quite as charming as enjoying the sunset while sitting on a River Street bench overlooking the Savannah River. Savannah, Georgia is well known for its beautiful Historic District and its wonderful southern hospitality. Savannah is home to attractions that will appeal to the young and the old. Art, shopping, food, and a great nightlife are only a few of the things Savannah has to offer.

One of the most popular attractions in Savannah is River Street, and for good reason. The well-named street is home to shops, restaurants, fabulous shopping, and more right on the Savannah River. Enjoy a ferry ride or a dinner cruise on the water. Sit and have your portrait drawn by local artisans, then take home your one of a kind piece. There are also many restaurants on River Street, and many have balconies or patios so you can enjoy the view of the river. If you are looking for nightlife, River Street turns into a great place to have a drink and some fun after hours.

If you have turned on a television in the past few years, you have probably seen, or heard, Paula Deen. Paula Deen is famous for her Southern drawl and even more for her sumptuous Southern home cooking. Now a star on The Food Network, Paula started out in good ole’ Savannah with her restaurant The Lady and Sons. Visit The Lady and Sons on West Congress Street and see where Paula started while tasting the best of Southern cooking. Tables go fast so get there in the morning to get on the list for dinner!

If you can’t wait to see the beauty the Savannah has to offer, why not take a tour? Savannah offers many tours throughout the Historic District and even on River Street. The best and most authentic tours are often trolley tours. Trolley tours show you Savannah’s greatest landmarks while a tour guide tells you the history of each one. Many of the trolley tours have themes, and Savannah in particular is known for its haunted locations. The Ghosts and Gravestones tour takes you to the Sorrel Weed House, a location featured on Ghost Hunters, as well as a haunted cemetery, all under the moonlight.

The famous Savannah College of Art and Design is located in the heart of downtown Savannah. The art influence of the school is strong and can be seen throughout Savannah. Throughout the year SCAD, as it is lovingly known by its students, has art and fashion shows. While you are in Savannah, be sure to check out the schedule for SCAD’s theatre program. You can catch a play or musical just steps from your hotel!

If you are going for a summer stay, it is a must to visit Tybee Island. Tybee Island is a short, half hour drive from Savannah. Tybee Island has wonderful, family friendly beaches for all to enjoy. You can enjoy a leisurely day in the sun and sand with a beautiful view of the ocean. While you are there, be sure to visit to historic Cockspur Lighthouse and Fort Pulaski.
